The key to a successful SUP with the dog is to prepare your puppy. One of the first and foremost aspects is about the safety for you and your dog. Then there are also some other items that you need to consider including the sunscreen, dry bag, leash, and many others.
Before getting on the board, you must make your dog familiar with the SUP. This can be a bit daunting if it is the first time for you and your dog to do the SUP together. Before your dog set his feet on your board, you will want your dog to observe the surrounding and the board itself. Let him sniff around until he is getting familiar with the board. If necessary, leave your things like sandal, clothes, or other stuff on the board. He will get familiar faster when recognizing one of your stuff.
Then the next thing you want to do is to take your dog down to the Kauai water and get his paws wet. It can be a thrilling experience for the first time. But once your dog gets used to the Kauai water, you will easily convince him to get on board with you.
Make sure that your dog is able to swim since falling off is inevitable. Although your dog already wears the vest, you will want your dog master the swimming skill so that he can reach the board faster. Make sure to start off with the shallow water. If you have a smaller pup, make sure to move the nose more towards to the shore so that you can manage the stability. For the larger breed of dog, you could use your friend’s help to hold the board stable. This will make you and your big dog easier to get on the board.
