Instead, you could pull your lower hand and hip to meet each other at the exit point of the stroke. The other proper way to add more power is by driving the top shoulder into the handle of the paddle when you press the paddle deeper. The high shoulder must be allowed to the counter twist to the lower shoulder when it attains the forward.

The key of these gestures is to create the momentum for the top shoulder to drive forward when the lower shoulder pulls back and unwinds from the stretch of the reach. It is essential to make sure that your top arm is straight when you drive the high shoulder into the handle. If you do this the right way, you will contribute the maximum energy that is delivered to the paddle.
